Italiano in Brisbano

jemmadavis7

Italian fare by a river with an Aperol Spritz in hand - if I close my eyes really hard I can almost transport myself there. If, like me though, your bank account and/or annual leave is blocking you from your dream eye-squeezed-shut Italian holiday - then look no further than Ciao Papi.

Part of the Howard Smith Wharves complex, Ciao Papi needs no introduction. Situated within THE place to be for the last three years and counting, the restaurant offers delicious Italian food at Sydney prices with iconic Brisbane views. There is also ample seating available both indoor and outdoor, which ranges from bar-style to tables and chairs - though you’d still be wise to book during traditionally busy times. The decor is minimal but effective, with a number of olive trees in large beige pots working with the brown and white tables and strung up lights to give it that Mediterran look. If you’re visiting in summer, rejoice! There are little fans lining the ceiling that work well to cool you down, and stand-up heaters which are pulled out in the winter to keep you warm.

Now, onto the more important topics, food and drink! The menu offers a relatively good selection of main meals, categorised into pasta, pizza or a handful of $45+ secondis. My friend and I ordered two entrees to share, a main each and a dessert each. Our entrees of Stracciatella and focaccia were delish, with the former consisting of the cheese itself with figs drizzled with honey. Combined with the warm bread, it was pretty heavenly. As for the mains, I ordered the lamb ragu agnello whilst my friend went for the ravioli. Though the ragu itself was to die for, some of my pasta was undercooked and thus on the chewy side. Considering it came at $36 (the price of two pints at Felons), that was a little disappointing. The ravioli was apparently worth every penny, however, and I have to say both portions were generous. For dessert, my Semifreddo was semi ‘eh, so?’, but my friend once again out-did me in the ordering arena with a stand-out tiramisu.

The final component to be commented upon is of course the service, which was prompt and efficient throughout our time there. Even though it was somewhat quiet when we went, I have been during the Christmas season and can confirm that the service was likewise then too. Considering, Brisbane’s entire office population descends upon here during December, that’s an impressive feat.

Overall, Ciao Papi’s is a lovely spot to eat, drink and watch the City Cats go by. Just beware of chewy pasta, and keep an eye on your bank balance throughout your meal. Saluti!
